Traffic has resumed on the Akoon–Bogoso Junction road in Tarkwa after a coordinated emergency response successfully cleared debris from a landslide that had disrupted movement along the busy route.
The landslide, which occurred near Redeemer Hospital opposite the Gold Fields Junction following heavy rainfall on Sunday, left motorists stranded and forced many commuters to seek alternative routes after mud, rocks and vegetation covered a section of the roadway.
The Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ebenezer Cobbina, was at the scene to oversee the emergency response and monitor the progress of the clearance exercise.
Working together, officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, and security personnel from Gold Fields Ghana deployed an excavator and a dump truck to remove the mud, rocks, and debris that had blocked the roadway.
The coordinated operation restored traffic flow and brought relief to motorists and commuters who had been affected by the temporary closure of the road.
Officials at the scene also directed traffic and monitored safety conditions while the clearance exercise was underway to ensure the smooth reopening of the route.
Although no injuries or fatalities were reported, the incident temporarily disrupted transportation and highlighted the risks posed by heavy rainfall in areas vulnerable to landslides and slope failures.
Residents have welcomed the rapid response by the emergency agencies but are urging authorities to consider long-term measures to stabilize the hillside, noting that a similar landslide occurred at the same location not long ago.
With the debris now cleared and the road reopened, motorists are being advised to exercise caution when travelling through the area, particularly as the rainy season continues.
The incident underscores the importance of swift inter-agency collaboration in responding to emergencies and minimizing disruptions to public movement and economic activities in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.
