Western Regional Coordinating Council puts ban on vegetable sales by food vendors due to outbreak of cholera

The Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) has announced urgent measures to combat a cholera outbreak that has reached alarming levels in the region.

As of December 7, 2024, a total of 789 suspected cases and eight deaths have been reported across health facilities. With daily reported cases exceeding 60, the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan and Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal areas account for 95% of the infections.

Environmental surveillance investigations have identified food vendors as the primary source of contamination, with 96% of infections linked to the sale of contaminated vegetables such as salads, leaves, and green peppers. In response, the WRCC has enacted a region-wide ban on the sale of vegetables by food vendors.

In a statement, the Council said “Offenders of this directive will face prosecution under the Public Health Act, 2012, Act 851. The ban will remain in effect until public health officials confirm the safety of vegetable sales”.

The WRCC strongly advises the public to refrain from purchasing or consuming vegetables from food vendors. For domestic use, vegetables should be thoroughly treated before consumption to ensure safety.
