Lawyer Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Prestea Huni-Valley Constituency, has announced her decision not to contest in future elections following the party’s defeat in the recently held parliamentary polls.
In a statement issued on Sunday, December 22, 2024, the former MP expressed her disappointment over the outcome of the elections but highlighted her gratitude to party supporters and volunteers who dedicated themselves to the campaign.
Despite her personal investment in community development projects, the NPP was unable to secure victory in the constituency.
“As steps are taken by the Party to reorganize and move forward towards Election 2028, all members of the Great Elephant Party are encouraged to remain committed and united, for in unity lies strength,” she noted.
However, she declared her intention to step back from active political contests, citing the lack of tangible outcomes despite her tireless efforts. “Personally, I’ve decided to step back, as one cannot continue to cast pearls for no meaningful outcome,” she stated.
Hon. Oteng-Gyasi emphasized her continued commitment to the development of the Prestea Huni-Valley Constituency and pledged to offer her support wherever necessary. “As a true indigene of Huni Valley, I shall continue to provide my little support whenever possible to my beloved Wassaman,” she added.
Reflecting on the campaign, she urged party members to stay focused on advocating for issues such as enhanced access to education, improved healthcare, infrastructure development, and sustainable economic growth.
“These issues must continue to be at the forefront of the Constituency’s agenda, and people must not cease clamoring for them,” she emphasized.
Hon. Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, a former Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, had been a prominent figure in the constituency, championing several initiatives to improve the lives of residents.
Her statement marks the end of an era in her political career but signals her unwavering commitment to her community.
In the aftermath of the loss, Hon. Oteng-Gyasi called for unity among party members, emphasizing the importance of staying together to prepare for future elections. “The good work does not end here; advocating for the needs and aspirations of the people of Prestea Huni-Valley must go on. Aluta Continua,” she concluded.
As the NPP reorganizes for 2028, the search for a new candidate to carry the party’s torch in the constituency begins, with hopes of reclaiming the seat in the next election.
