The media’s attention has been drawn to shift the world’s attention to Climate change as it poses an existential threat to the planet and our way of life.

Speaking at the just-ended 3rd African Media Convention in Accra, the President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo stated that the media must amplify the voices of those affected by climate change, especially in communities that are often overlooked in international discourse.

“Environmental sustainability should be at the heart of media practice. This means not only reporting on climate change but also adopting sustainable practices in media production itself. From reducing carbon footprints to promoting recycling and sustainable energy use, there is much the media industry can do to lead by example”, the president said.

Use your platforms to showcase innovative solutions, and highlight the work of environmental heroes across our continent and beyond. It is essential to foster a culture of environmental responsibility among our citizens, particularly the youth, who are the most impacted by climate change and the most potent agents of change.

He urged members of the African media fraternity, to take a proactive role in educating and engaging the public on environmental issues.

“Use your platforms to showcase innovative solutions, and highlight the work of environmental heroes across our continent and beyond. It is essential to foster a culture of environmental responsibility among our citizens, particularly the youth, who are both the most impacted by climate change and the most potent agents of change”, he explained.

The President admonished the media, not to forget that environmental sustainability is intrinsically linked to economic and social sustainability, adding that “ As media practitioners, you have the unique ability to weave these threads into a coherent narrative that underscores the interconnectedness of all these issues. Through compelling storytelling, you can help society envision a sustainable future and the pathways to achieving it.”

He noted that “The dynamic media landscape of today also offers an unprecedented opportunity to bridge divides. By enhancing understanding and fostering dialogue among diverse communities, the media can be a unifying force in our fragmented world. It can illuminate the common challenges we face, from climate change to economic inequality, and rally collective action”.
