Members of the Ghana Veterinary Medical Association(GVMA) have called on the Government of Ghana, the private sector and other stakeholders to continuously recognise the critical roles veterinarians play in Ghana and motivate them in order to continue to contribute their quota towards nation building.
This was contained in a press release issued by the group on the World Veterinary Day which falls on 27th April every year.
The day aims to mark the importance of veterinary doctors who work on improving.
This year’s celebration is on the theme; “Veterinarians are essential health workers.” The GVMA said this year’s theme resonates with association’s quest to ensuring that the veterinary profession in Ghana continues to contribute significantly to animal and
public health delivery in the country and beyond.
“The application of veterinary science contributes not only to animal health and well-being but also to human’s physical, mental and social wellbeing. Veterinarians in Ghana play key roles in promoting animal, public and environmental health through the
application of the One Health Approach.” , the statement said.
It added that “The work of veterinarians affect you whether you ownhe work of veterinarians affect you whether you own an animal or not. We work in diverse areas in Ghana including the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Ghana Armed Forces, Wildlife Division of Forestry Commission, Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Academic and Research Institutions, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), among others”
The association said “Veterinarians play pivotal roles in clinical practice, disease diagnosis, food safety and inspection, scientific researches, wildlife medicine, regulatory and public health.There is therefore no doubt that veterinarians in Ghana are indeed essential health providers”.
“We have also collaborated with both local and international partners and researchers to carry out activities on diseases of public health and economic importance over the years. For example veterinarians in Ghana h7ave actively participated in outbreaks investigation and control regarding Avian Influenza, Africa Swine Fever, Anthrax, Zoonotic Tuberculosis (TB), Trypanosomiasis, Marburg Virus Disease, Monkey Pox, CoVID-19, etc. in the country. We have and would continue to carry out our mandate as professionals to impact lives in the country”, the association noted.
