President John Dramani Mahama has announced the immediate revocation of appointments of all Chief Executives of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDCEs) as well as Assembly Members appointed under relevant sections of the Local Governance Act.
The decision was communicated through an official letter dated January 8, 2025, and signed by Dr Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President.
The letter referenced the powers granted under the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936) as amended by the Local Governance (Amendment) Act, 2017 (Act 940), which empowers the President to make such changes.
In the interim, Coordinating Directors of the various Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) have been directed to assume responsibility as acting Chief Executives.
This measure is to ensure continuity in governance while substantive appointments are finalized.
The decision is part of ongoing efforts by the government to strengthen local governance structures and enhance service delivery at the district level.
The revocation affects key local government officials across the country, marking a significant shift in the administration of local assemblies.
This move by President Mahama is expected to pave the way for the appointment of new officials who will align with the government’s developmental agenda.
