The running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has announced that an NDC-led government will focus on training illegal miners, also known as galamseyers, on how to mine without harming water bodies and the environment.

During an address at a community event in Amenfi Central, Western North Region, she criticized the current government for its failure to provide employment opportunities, which she claims has left many youths with no choice but to turn to galamsey for survival.

“Illegal mining is rampant in areas like Amenfi, causing serious environmental damage. But with no jobs available, what else can the youth do? Galamsey becomes their only means of livelihood,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang remarked.

She acknowledged that gold has been present in Ghana for many years and that galamsey has a long history. However, she pointed out that the lack of viable job alternatives has exacerbated the problem in rural areas, making illegal mining the only option for many.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang revealed the NDC’s plan to introduce training programs aimed at teaching miners sustainable practices that will protect the environment, preserve the health of the miners, and secure their future livelihoods.

“If the youth will continue mining, they must learn to do it in a way that doesn’t destroy their communities or pollute water bodies. The NDC is committed to offering practical solutions to help them mine responsibly and protect their future,” she added.

This initiative aligns with the NDC’s broader agenda to promote environmentally responsible mining practices and ensure the sustainability of local communities that depend on mining activities.
