Justice Torkornoo sworn in as the 15th Chief Justice of Ghana

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo has sworn in Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana.

Justice Torkornoo has become the fifteen Chief Justice and the third female Chief Justice after Justice Theodora Woode and Justice Gloria Akuffo.

At a swearing-in ceremony, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo “I have no doubt chief justice Torkornoo will be a worthy fit for her jurisdiction”

The President described Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo as someone who has a full grasp of the intricacies of judicial administration

Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo expects the tenure of the Chief Justice will be marked by order, fairness, diligence, deep-seated respect for the rule of law, and continuation of the modernization of judicial functions and the expansion of infrastructure.

In her response, the Chief Justice expressed her appreciation to the president for honoring her to the highest position of the judicial system in Ghana.

She pledged her commitment to the advancement of the proper judicial system in the country.

Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo born 11 September 1962 is a Ghanaian judge. She was nominated to the Supreme Court in November 2019 and received parliamentary approval in December 2019. She was sworn in on 17 December 2019.

She was one of the first Justices of the Commercial Division of the High Court and has been active in the core reform agenda and activities of the Judiciary and Judicial Service of Ghana since 2005.

She was nominated to the office of Chief Justice in April 2023 to replace Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah who retired as Chief Justice on May 24, 2023.
