AngloGold Ashanti’s Iduapriem Mine has conducted an Iduapriem emergency drill in the Mile 7 and Mile 8 communities in the Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality to test and strengthen community preparedness for potential emergencies.
The planned Emergency Response and Evacuation Drill was held on September 24, 2026, in collaboration with the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).
The exercise simulated a hypothetical emergency involving the mine’s Beposo Tailings Storage Facility (BTSF). According to the press statement, the simulation was designed to evaluate emergency preparedness and strengthen community safety in line with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).
Community evacuation exercise
During the Iduapriem emergency drill, residents responded to simulated early warning alerts and moved to designated safe assembly points under the direction of community volunteers and emergency personnel.
The exercise assessed the effectiveness of early warning systems and evacuation protocols, while also testing coordination among the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, and other relevant local stakeholders.
The drill was specifically designed as a simulation. AngloGold Ashanti stressed that there was no actual failure, breach or emergency at the Tailings Storage Facility during the exercise. Lessons to strengthen emergency preparedness
AngloGold Ashanti’s Iduapriem Mine expressed appreciation to residents of Mile 7 and Mile 8, traditional authorities, UMaT, government agencies, emergency services, media representatives and community partners for their participation and support.
The mine said it will review the outcomes of the exercise with key stakeholders and use lessons identified to strengthen its formal emergency preparedness and response plans.
