Gold Fields Foundation inspires girls to pursue careers in STEM

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has encouraged young girls at Samahu in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The Foundation made the call during an educational and career readiness engagement at Richard Graeme Basic School in Samahu on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, as part of activities to mark Ada Lovelace Day.

The programme brought together JHS 3 students and their parents, with a focus on helping students understand their educational and career options beyond basic school.

Past scholarship beneficiaries and Graduate Trainees of Gold Fields engaged the students on STEM careers, educational pathways and the opportunities available in science and technology-related fields.

They shared their personal experiences and encouraged the students, particularly the girls, to develop the confidence and interest needed to pursue careers in areas traditionally seen as male-dominated.

The engagement also exposed students to the importance of making informed career choices early and preparing themselves academically for future opportunities.

Parents participated in a separate Parent-Teacher Association engagement, where they received guidance on how to support their children academically and emotionally as they prepare for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Ada Lovelace Day is observed internationally to celebrate the legacy of Ada Lovelace, who is widely recognised for her pioneering contribution to computing.

The day also seeks to encourage greater participation of women and girls in STEM.

The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation says its engagement is aimed at inspiring young people to explore STEM opportunities while providing girls with the confidence and support to pursue careers in the field.

The Foundation believes early exposure to STEM careers and interaction with professionals can help students make informed choices about their education and future careers.
