Professor Emeritus Daniel Mireku-Gyimah, the foundation Vice Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) and the first Mining Professor in West Africa, has passed away.

The distinguished academic and trailblazer in mining engineering died on 17th September 2025 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness, according to a family statement issued on 19th September.

Prof. Mireku-Gyimah was celebrated not only in Ghana but across the continent for breaking barriers in mining education and research. His pioneering work made him a household name in academia, and his contributions laid the foundation for the training of generations of engineers who now serve in the mining industry both locally and internationally.

As UMaT’s first Vice Chancellor, he played a central role in the institution’s transformation into a fully-fledged university. His vision and leadership helped position the school as a center of excellence in mining and related engineering fields.

“He was a strong pillar of society and dedicated his life to serving the country. He will be remembered with profound respect and affection,” the family’s announcement said.

Since news of his passing broke, tributes have poured in from academia, industry, and former students. Many have described him as a mentor, a patriotic leader, and a man whose life’s work reshaped Ghana’s mining education.

The family has requested privacy during this difficult time, adding that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
