A 29-year-old fisherman, Nii Baah Afful, has been sentenced to one week in prison by the Gender-Based Violence Court in Accra for physically assaulting his partner, Francisca Aryee, during a domestic altercation that gained widespread attention on social media.
The disturbing incident, which occurred on March 20, 2025, at Korle Gonno, saw Afful assaulting Francisca while she was holding their 8-month-old baby. Preliminary police investigations confirmed that the couple lived together and had two children.
Afful was arrested two days after the incident, on March 22, by the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Unit. He was remanded by the court and formally arraigned on March 24.
At a court hearing held on April 9, 2025, Afful pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to one week of imprisonment with hard labour. He is currently serving his sentence at the Nsawam Maximum Security Prison.
The Greater Accra Police Command is using the opportunity to urge the public to report all forms of domestic violence. Victims are encouraged to speak up and seek help through appropriate legal and support channels.
The case has reignited public debate over domestic abuse and the protection of vulnerable individuals, especially children, in volatile domestic environments.
