MTN Ghana, has launched “Y’ello Care 2024” with the introduction of Digital Literacy Education at Diabene Senior High Technical School near Takoradi.
The 30 Days of Y’ello Care which is on the theme “Education for Rural and Remote Communities – Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow”, is a remarkable initiative that reinforces the company’s commitment to communities”.
David Woase, Area Sales Manager, Southwest of MTN Ghana explained that the 21 Days of Y’ello Care, is an annual staff volunteer programme instituted 17 years ago, to allow MTN staff to volunteer their skills and services freely for the benefit of the community while investing in identified community improvement projects in rural areas.
According to him, MTN Foundation is dedicated to this cause. “We are delighted to be able to provide hands-on support to these remote areas through unique and innovative community improvement programmes, that address critical needs in those communities”.
He pointed out that this year’s campaign coincides with the 30th Anniversary celebration of MTN Group. “As such, this year’s edition is called “30 Days of Y’ello Care”, which started on June 1st will end on June 30th, 2024.Mr. Woase clarified that the theme for this year, emphasizes the important role education plays in transforming the communities, strengthening socio-economic growth and prosperity, as well as preparing the youth with the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources for the future.“With the 2024 edition of 30 Days of Y’ello Care campaign, we seek to provide modern amenities and educational facilities in line with our digital focus to bring innovation to the doorstep of these deprived schools” he said.
This, he noted will help demonstrate the limitless boundaries of technology and the opportunities it presents. “With the objective of expanding, empowering and equipping schools, MTNers through 30 Days of Y’ello Care, will set up container-based learning facilities, equipped with computers, internet access, textbooks, and supplementary reading materials. We will also provide story books and other learning materials in the selected schools to enhance teaching and learning”.
Mr. Woase also said, “we will also implement a specialised programme dubbed “Quench and Connect”. Our volunteers will help to drill digital boreholes in some schools facing water crises of which your school, will be a beneficiary. We hope that providing these boreholes will alleviate the burden on the beneficiary schools and allow students to focus on their studies”.
Again, he said “our initiatives will also include data education and digital literacy workshops for students and teachers. Through these projects, we hope to improve the quality of teaching and learning in our schools”.
Mr. Woase expressed gratitude to all MTN employees for their contributions to the success of Y’ello Care over the years and encouraged every single employee volunteer, to participate.
On Digital Literacy Education
Today, he said, “we are using the opportunity to begin our activities with Digital Literacy Education, which is crucial for students in today’s technology-driven world. It empowers you with the skills to effectively navigate, evaluate, and create digital content. With this you are access and manage information efficiently, communicate and collaborate online safely and responsibly, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, create and share content using various digital tools among other”.
Mr. Woase noted that by incorporating digital literacy education into your learning journey, you can become confident, competent, and responsible digital citizens, better equipped to succeed in an increasingly digital world.
Reverend Peter Bontha Kisseih, Headmaster of the school was delighted MTN chose to celebrate the Yello Care with the School.“
Academically, he said the school is now on top. “We believe MTN is here to support us realise our success story by supporting us with the construction of a new Assembly hall a school bus among others” he said.
He called on other development partners to support the school obtain the needed status.Chief Executive Officer of Duapa Werkspace, Erasmus Mensah- Ackon discussed Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it is transforming various sectors.
He encouraged them to take advantage of the ICTspace, pursue courses in the area to become self employed even before leaving school.
As part of the Yello Care celebration, MTN presented colour coded litter bins for proper waste management as well as to help in waste segregation in the school.
