The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation’s scholarship programme has reached 3,092 beneficiaries since its establishment in 2005, with another 150 tertiary students receiving support under the 2026 scholarship scheme.
The latest beneficiaries were awarded scholarships at the 2026 Gold Fields Ghana Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony held at the Akoon Club House in Tarkwa on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President of Community at Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Dr. Celestina Allotey, said the programme was established to help brilliant young people from the company’s host communities overcome financial barriers to completing their education.
She said the impact of the programme could be seen in the careers of several former beneficiaries, who have gone on to become doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, entrepreneurs and other professionals.
Of the 150 students receiving scholarships this year, 86 are female, a development Dr. Allotey described as particularly encouraging.
She said the figure reflects the growing participation and success of young women in higher education and expressed confidence that the support would enable the beneficiaries to pursue their tertiary education with greater focus and confidence.
Community schools feeding the scholarship programme
Dr. Allotey also highlighted the link between Gold Fields’ investment in basic education and the Foundation’s scholarship programme.
She disclosed that 50 of the 150 new beneficiaries received their basic education in schools within Gold Fields’ host communities, excluding the greater Tarkwa area.
She said the development demonstrates the impact that investments in education at the community level can have on the educational advancement of young people.
Gold Fields has provided classroom blocks in Awudua, Brahabobom, Huniso, Pepesa, Samahu, New Atuabo, Abekoase and Tebe, while its Teachers’ Motivation Programme has also been implemented in the host communities.
According to Dr. Allotey, the programme has contributed to a well-motivated teaching force and improved academic performance among young people in the beneficiary communities.
Preparing beneficiaries for the workplace
Beyond financial support for tertiary education, the Foundation is introducing a “Lecture Hall to Workplace” series during vacation periods.
The initiative is intended to equip scholarship beneficiaries with practical skills and help prepare them for the world of work.
Dr. Allotey urged the beneficiaries to take their education seriously, maintain good academic performance and conduct themselves in ways that would make their families and communities proud.
She also encouraged them to remember their communities and, in the future, support other young people who may need assistance.
The Foundation, she added, would continue to monitor the progress of the beneficiaries in their respective institutions.
