Gold Fields Ghana Limited has donated nine electricity transformers valued at GH¢1.098 million to improve power supply in its host communities through the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation.
The transformers will support communities in Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley. They include Awudua, Samahu, Abekoase and Benso.A 500 kVA transformer will also support power supply at the T&A Stadium in Tarkwa.
The donation comes as communities face low distribution capacity and frequent power outages.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, Gold Fields Ghana Senior Vice President and Managing Director, Elliot Twum, said the donation supports essential community infrastructure.
He said the initiative will help meet the growing energy needs of households and local businesses.
The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has invested more than US$113 million in community development projects across Ghana.
Its investments cover education, healthcare, water and sanitation, infrastructure and enterprise development.
ECG Tarkwa District Manager, Engineer Odame Thompson, welcomed the support. He said the new transformers will improve electricity supply and reduce pressure on the local power network.
Engineer Thompson also warned residents against illegal power connections. He noted that illegal connections overload transformers and can damage the equipment.
He said ECG monitors transformer capacity every month. He explained that transformers should not operate above 70 percent of their capacity.
Engineer Thompson said population growth and high-power activities such as welding and local gold processing have increased demand.
This, he noted, leads to illegal connections that remain common in some communities. He urged residents to report illegal connections to ECG.

The Members of Parliament for Tarkwa Nsuaem and Prestea Huni-Valley Hon. Issah Salifu Taylor and Hon. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe respectively welcomed the donation.
They expressed happiness that the intervention will help address persistent power challenges in communities within their constituencies.
The two MPs expressed appreciation to Gold Fields Ghana for its support in improving electricity supply in theirconstituencies.
