Chief of Staff Julius Debrah broke down in tears on Sunday as he apologised to Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye.

This followed controversial remarks made by Ghana Free Zones Authority CEO, Dr Mary Awusi.

Julius Debrah made the emotional apology during a church service at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC) Trasacco. The service marked his 60th birthday celebration.

President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and other top government officials attended the event.

Speaking before the congregation, Debrah pleaded with the church leadership and members to forgive Dr Mary Awusi and the government.

He described Awusi’s remarks as an unfortunate “slip.”
“The chairman of our church… you know myself, Honourable Ed Ofosu Ampofo, our Local Government Minister, and several others are members of your church. A few days ago, one of our colleagues, Dr Mary Awusi, slipped a bit against you,” he said.

Mr. Debrah added, “I want on this occasion, to commemorate my birthday, to let the whole church forgive us. It was just a slip. It wasn’t intentionally done to malign our church. I believe sincerely that you forgive her and forgive us and accept us as your children.”

Dr Mary Awusi came under public criticism after she reportedly attacked Apostle Nyamekye during a radio interview over his comments on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Her remarks triggered backlash from sections of the public and the Christian community. She later issued an apology.

Apostle Eric Nyamekye responded calmly and assured Julius Debrah that he held no grudge against Awusi.

“As for this lady, she has made me more popular,” he said, sparking laughter in the congregation.

He added, “People like that, I don’t think about them because she just made our church and myself more popular. If I held anything against her, I would have said something about her. But I think that we all have our opinions on issues, so let’s just forget about this one.”

Apostle Nyamekye ended by saying, “So, I’ve forgiven her, so don’t worry. I want your heart to rest and enjoy this day.”
