Nana Nteboa Pra IV, the Divisional Chief of Prestea-Himan Traditional Area in the Western Region’s Prestea Huni Valley Municipality, has commended Justice Maxwell Acquah, General Manager of Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, for his visionary leadership and commitment to the company’s growth.

Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, a fully Ghanaian-owned gold mining company, has been a key player in the local economy despite facing challenges.

The Chief made his remarks during a visit by the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and current Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was on a four-day campaign tour of the Western Region.

“He has the company’s best interests at heart and has brought significant change to both the company and the community at large,” Nana Nteboa Pra IV said.

Despite these positive strides, the Chief highlighted a critical issue facing Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited: the lack of a mining concession. “If the company were granted land to mine, it would greatly boost the local economy, increase royalty payments, create jobs for the youth, and contribute to infrastructure development and technological advancement,” he stated.

Nana Nteboa made a direct appeal to the government, urging the NPP Flagbearer to support the company in obtaining a mining concession. He emphasized that this would lead to transformative growth for the town, benefiting local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and enhancing the Internally Generated Fund (IGF) of the municipality.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia endorsed the Chief’s call and praised Justice Maxwell Acquah for his efforts. “We’ve heard glowing reports about the Managing Director and his contributions to the mine and the development of Prestea. The government will give him all the necessary support to further develop the mine. It is in the state’s interest to help Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited obtain its own concession,” Bawumia affirmed.

In a radio interview on Radio 360’s morning show in Takoradi, Justice Maxwell Acquah expressed optimism about the Vice President’s pledge. “Nana’s appeal is timely. Many mining companies have folded, leaving Prestea Sankofa as one of the few remaining. We employ over 300 direct staff, and for more than 100 years, we’ve had to rely on the tailings from large-scale mining companies. In 2012, we invested over $3 million in exploration, but the results were disappointing. Many concessions are held by companies like FGR, which have since folded. If the government grants us these concessions, as Nana suggested, and with some additional expertise, I am confident we can achieve our full potential,” Acquah stated.

The Prestea community eagerly anticipates positive developments following the Vice President’s visit, hoping that the government’s support will lead to new growth opportunities for Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited and the local economy.
