Heath Goldfields Limited has announced major progress in the revival of the Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine, signaling renewed growth for Ghana’s gold mining industry and communities in the Western Region.
Speaking at a media briefing, the Managing Director of Heath Goldfields, Mr Patrick Appiah Mensah reaffirmed the company’s commitment to safety, infrastructure, and community development.
He noted that, “The Bogoso-Prestea Gold Mine has stood for more than a century as one of Ghana’s most historic mining operations. Generations of miners, families, and communities have drawn their livelihoods from these grounds. Yet in recent years, the mine fell into severe decline, weighed down by technical challenges and financial distress.”
With operations halted, workers unpaid, and contractors in debt, the mine’s future once seemed uncertain. The Government of Ghana’s decision to terminate the lease of the previous operator created an opportunity for Heath Goldfields to step in and revive the mine.
Major Achievements in the Revival
Since taking over, Heath GoldFields has made strategic investments that are already transforming the mine and its surrounding communities. The company has cleared more than GHS 100 million in outstanding salaries and employee provident funds, while also settling GHS 16.8 million owed to local contractors, restoring confidence among local businesses.
Over GHS 34 million has been invested in safety and infrastructure upgrades, including the restoration of the mine’s winder to meet regulatory standards. In addition, Knight Piésold has been reinstated as Engineer of Record for the Tailings Storage Facility, where dewatering works are ongoing.

“Already, water levels are down 25 feet below 17 Level — visible progress that shows the mine is on the right path,” the Managing Director said. “But two years of neglect cannot be unwound in just a matter of months. We are committed to doing it properly, safely, and transparently,” Mr Appiah Mensah added.
Currently, continuous pumping at the Prestea underground mine is removing up to 6,800 cubic meters of water daily, with capacity expected to reach 10,000 cubic meters by October 2025.
Wayforward
Heath GoldFields outlined its next steps, including the commencement of open-pit mining operations, acceleration of underground dewatering, and the refurbishment of the processing plant. The company also pledged to ensure that host communities benefit directly from job opportunities, social investments, and infrastructure support.
The Managing Director explained that, “The story of Bogoso-Prestea is no longer one of despair, but of renewal. Jobs are being restored, businesses are regaining confidence, and communities once without hope are finding new optimism,” the company assured. The revival of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine not only strengthens the Western Region mining industry but also contributes to Ghana’s position as Africa’s leading gold producer.
Heath GoldFields emphasized that its interventions have been made even before gold production begins — a sign of its long-term commitment to sustainable mining in Ghana. The company extended its appreciation to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Minerals Commission, the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union, traditional leaders, and local authorities for their partnership.
“We call on government and all stakeholders to continue extending their support, as this partnership is essential to restoring Bogoso-Prestea to its rightful place as a world-class mining operation and a cornerstone of Ghana’s mining industry,” the MD concluded.
