The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has received a major boost to its practical training resources following the donation of a Caterpillar 966H Wheel Loader by Quantum LC Company Ltd.
The company, a leading provider of contract mining services, consultancy, earthworks, and heavy mining equipment, made the donation as part of its corporate social responsibility and commitment to strengthening ties between academia and industry.
The equipment was officially handed over to UMaT’s Mechanical Engineering Department on Wednesday, February 19, 2025. Representing the Managing Director of Quantum LC, Mr. Titus Glover, the company’s Tarkwa branch Construction Manager, Mr. Felix Awuku, presented the loader to the university.
During the presentation, Mr. Awuku emphasized Quantum LC’s dedication to supporting practical training for future engineers, stating that hands-on experience is a key part of their social contract.
He reaffirmed the company’s long-standing partnership with UMaT and expressed confidence that the equipment would significantly enhance practical learning for students.
Receiving the donation on behalf of UMaT, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Grace Ofori-Sarpong Akuffo, expressed deep gratitude to Quantum LC for their generosity.

She highlighted the Mechanical Engineering Department’s crucial role in the university’s curriculum, providing foundational training in disciplines such as Fluid Mechanics, Strength of Materials, and Engineering Drawing.
According to her, the addition of the Caterpillar 966H Wheel Loader will greatly enhance students’ understanding of heavy equipment operations, better preparing them for careers in the mining and allied industries.
The Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Dr. Henry Otoo, also commended the donation, describing it as a timely intervention to address training challenges within the department.
He noted that UMaT has a strong track record of producing skilled professionals for key industries, including mining, petroleum and gas, aviation, transportation, and the armed forces.
Many UMaT alumni, he added, hold prominent expatriate roles beyond Ghana and across the globe.Dr. Otoo further stressed the importance of equipping students with hands-on experience in tools, machinery, and workshop practices to enhance their industry readiness.
He called on industry players to continue supporting the university through equipment donations and internship opportunities.
Additionally, he encouraged UMaT alumni to contribute to the growth and development of the department.
