Police Arrest 11 Suspects for Illegal Mining in Western Region

The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested eleven individuals for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Bonsa River bank in the Western Region of Ghana.

The suspects, comprising seven Ghanaians and four Chinese nationals, were apprehended on March 31, 2025, following a sustained intelligence-led operation targeting illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey’.

Five of the suspects, identified as Wei Qinwei, Yao Yongji, Nsoh Oto (Agologo), Kwadwo George (Sergio), and Emmanuel Van (Atta), were arrested at a mining site in Bonsa. The remaining six—Nuang Shichuan, Huang Xinbao, Douglas Ayambilla, Elvis Aborta, Michael Tettey Komlorm, and Ibrahim Dauda—were arrested at Wassa Agona.

The suspects are currently in police custody and will be processed for court soon to face the full force of the law

In a statement, the Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to fighting crime and illegal activities.

“We want to assure the general public, especially communities within the Western Central Regional Police Command, that we remain dedicated to enforcing the law and ensuring security across the country,” the police stated.

Illegal mining has been a major environmental and economic concern in Ghana. The practice, which often involves the use of harmful chemicals and heavy machinery, leads to water pollution, deforestation, and land degradation. The arrest of these individuals forms part of the government’s ongoing efforts to curb the menace.
