Kofi Yeboah, General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has donated essential items including a freezer, clothes, and sanitary pads to the Accra Rehabilitation Centre (ARC) to support the rehabilitation of the centre.
In addition, Yeboah called on both Corporate Ghana and individuals to extend their support to the Centre, which plays a critical role in providing vocational training for persons with disabilities (PWDs).
Yeboah’s motivation for the donation stemmed from his personal experience while conducting fieldwork at the ARC as part of his Master of Laws (LLM) program in Human Rights Law and Practice at the University of Ghana. He noted that the ARC is facing urgent needs for basic items essential for the upkeep and training of its trainees.
This act of generosity is part of Yeboah’s broader humanitarian service project, ‘Turntable & Tenable,’ which seeks to assist underprivileged groups. “Today also marks my birthday, and I thought it fitting to celebrate with you by mobilizing these items from friends to support your needs,” Yeboah said during the donation on October 23, 2024.
Yeboah, who is also a communications lecturer at Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, emphasized the importance of helping the trainees at ARC. He specifically highlighted the need for facilities to train PWDs in ICT and hairdressing, which are crucial for empowering them to assert their economic rights by securing employment after their training.
The Centre Manager, Seth Dzidzornu, and Assistant Manager, Ms. Nina Okorafor, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the donation. They viewed the gesture as a testament to the selflessness of Yeboah and his friends, with Dzidzornu confidently stating, “This is just the beginning; greater things are coming.”
Trainees of the ARC marked the occasion by singing a birthday song for Yeboah, reflecting their appreciation for the generous support.
The ARC remains hopeful that more organizations and individuals will follow in Yeboah’s footsteps by supporting its critical mission to empower PWDs through vocational training.
