The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has reassured the public of its role in maintaining peace and security during the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections. In a press release issued on December 1, 2024, from the Department of Public Relations, GAF confirmed that no military personnel would be stationed at polling stations across the country.
According to the statement signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, the Director General of Public Relations, the responsibility for election security lies primarily with the Ghana Police Service (GPS). The military’s role will be confined to standby support and will only intervene upon a formal request from the police.
To ensure transparency and prevent any potential misunderstandings, GAF urged the public to report any unauthorized individuals posing as military personnel or wearing military-patterned attire at polling stations. Reports can be made to the nearest police station or through the GPS toll-free numbers 18555 or 0800 311 311.
GAF also called on citizens to exercise their civic duties peacefully and responsibly, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the stability and integrity of the election process.
The statement concluded with GAF’s commitment to upholding national security while fostering trust and confidence in the electoral process.
