The Central North Police Regional Command has arrested five individuals, including two Ghanaians and three Chinese nationals, for engaging in illegal mining activities in a farming community near Assin Akonfudi.

The suspects—Duut Kwabena Sakakba, 38; Douglas Nyamekye, 36; Ma Jian, 37; Ma Young, 31; and Ma Haibi, 54—were apprehended by the Special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce on April 7 during an operation at Assin Ayitey along the river Fum in the Assin North Constituency.

According to a police statement signed by ASP Francis Onyina of the Public Affairs Directorate, the suspects are currently in custody and are being processed for court.

Authorities also discovered two excavators at the site, with chassis numbers SY 6HK1-XABEA-01-C3 and SWE365EO0762. While the operators fled with the ignition keys, efforts are underway to move the machines to a secure location. Investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute the owners of the excavators.

In addition, a Toyota Hilux pickup truck with registration number GE 2743-13 found at the scene has been impounded by police.

The Central North Police assured the public of their continued commitment to the fight against illegal mining, which continues to pose significant threats to the environment and public health.
