A routine anti-galamsey operation took a devastating turn on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, when Constable John Kwabena Dogbe of the Central North Regional Police Command lost his life while battling illegal mining at Assin Asaman.

The swoop, aimed at curbing the destruction of Ghana’s natural resources, saw police officers raiding an illegal mining site along the River Offin. As soon as the illegal miners spotted the police team, they abandoned their changfang machines and water pumps, fleeing across the river.

Determined to dismantle the mining setup, Constable Dogbe attempted to navigate the site but lost his footing and fell into the river. Despite desperate efforts from his colleagues to rescue him, the strong currents carried him away.

A four-hour search ensued before his lifeless body was recovered. His death has sent shockwaves through the security service, raising concerns about the risks officers face in the fight against illegal mining.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the Central North Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to eradicating illegal mining and protecting the country’s environment.

Colleagues and community members have hailed Constable Dogbe for his bravery and dedication to duty. His tragic death underscores the urgent need for enhanced safety measures in anti-galamsey operations.
