Accra Police Bust Vehicle Theft Syndicate, Arrest Alleged Kingpin

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has apprehended the suspected leader of a vehicle theft and rental fraud syndicate believed to have been operating across various parts of the country.

The suspect, 37-year-old Nana Anderson — also known as Anderson Nana Abeka, Essel Kofi Elvis, and Willson Kojo Bismark — was arrested on April 5, 2025, at a hideout in Atasemanso, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. He is currently in police custody as investigations continue.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service’s Regional Public Affairs Unit, Anderson is an unemployed man who is alleged to have masterminded a well-coordinated scam involving forged ECOWAS identity cards and driver’s licenses.

These fraudulent documents, bearing different names but using his photograph, were used to deceive car rental companies and individuals into handing over vehicles.

The syndicate’s operations came to light following an incident on March 25, 2025, when Anderson allegedly rented a Hyundai Elantra from a car rental partner under false pretenses and failed to return the vehicle. The vehicle’s tracking system was reportedly disabled shortly after.

Further investigations revealed that Anderson had used similar tactics to fraudulently acquire multiple vehicles between January and March 2025.

These included a Kia Forte at Hatso, a Honda Civic at Amansaman, and a Kia Ultima at Spintex — all within the Greater Accra Region. He is said to have earned GH¢4,000 for each stolen car.

Following his arrest, Anderson is reported to have confessed to the crimes and assisted the police in tracing a location in Millennium City, suspected to be the residence of a second suspect, identified as Gideon Baah. However, Baah remains at large.

The police have since arraigned Anderson before court while continuing efforts to locate and arrest Gideon Baah.

The Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice.
