Tarkwa traffic congestion: Assembly reshapes inner roads

The Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Assembly is taking steps to ease Tarkwa traffic congestion caused by the ongoing re-asphalting of the Tarkwa-Takoradi road.

The Assembly plans to reshape selected inner roads to provide alternative routes for motorists and reduce pressure on the main Tarkwa-Takoradi road as construction works continue.

This was disclosed by the Head of Communication at the assembly, Mrs. Babbie Annan Nunoo, while speaking on the Dynamite Breakfast Show (DBS) on Dynamite Fm in Tarkwa on Friday October 9, 2026.

She said the measures followed consultations among key stakeholders to manage traffic and minimise inconvenience to motorists.

According to her, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ebenezer Kobbina, had engaged officials from Gabriel Cuoto, the road contractor, to discuss measures to address the traffic situation. The Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) has also met to develop a traffic management strategy for the municipality.

Mrs. Annan Nunoo said the Assembly would reshape selected inner roads to make them suitable as alternative routes for motorists. The routes include the DeKings Hotel bypass, the SGS-Jerusalem route, and the Roman Junction through Chalekrom to Hiltop Junction, continuing through the Hiltop Hospital area to Hotel De Hill.

She said heavy-duty equipment from the Assembly’s District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), machinery fleet was being deployed to the various locations.

According to her, reshaping works are expected to begin by the weekend to prepare the alternative routes for motorists.

The Assembly expects the intervention to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion while the re-asphalting of the Tarkwa-Takoradi road continues.
