Gov’t Rejects Gold Fields Damang Mine Lease Extension Request

Gold Fields Ghana has announced that its application to extend the Damang Main Mining Lease, which expires on April 18, 2025, has been officially rejected.

This development means the company will be unable to continue operations at the Damang site beyond the stated date and must vacate the lease area.

In a statement to staff dated April 12, Executive Vice President and Head of Gold Fields West Africa, Mr. Elliot Twum, expressed the company’s disappointment and outlined the immediate steps being taken in response to the situation.

According to the note, the company has already initiated a phased reduction in production activities at Damang and is preparing for an orderly shutdown while continuing discussions with the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in hopes of finding a resolution.

Mr. Twum assured employees that this setback affects only the Damang mine and not operations at Tarkwa. He emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its workforce and to maintaining clear communication with all stakeholders during this uncertain time.

“We are fully committed to engaging constructively with all relevant stakeholders—especially our people,” Mr. Eliot Twum stated, adding that a Management Committee has been formed to assess the situation and explore all options to mitigate the impact.

Gold Fields says it remains focused on operating safely and productively while pursuing all avenues for a favorable outcome.
