The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) Tarkwa has gone into an agreement to train staff in Mohammed Brothers Ltd, a small-scale mining company in Tarkwa.
This is to enable the staff of the company to get the necessary mining skills to boost the company’s gold production. In return for this, the University would send some students on industrial attachment to help the students get the practical side of mining.
Muhammed brothers would also sponsor some brilliant but needy students of the University by giving them scholarships.
As part of the agreement, there is also going to be collaborative research on specific areas to identify problems in the mining industry and find solutions to them.
At a short ceremony to sign the Memorandum of Understanding the Pro Vice Chancellor for UMaT, Prof Anthony Simons noted that the idea of the company to sponsor brilliant but needy students is a refreshing one.
“Sponsoring needy but brilliant students from their community where they are working is a good thing to do, giving back to society as a corporate social responsibility”, he said.
Prof Simons said the University is ready to sit down with management of Mohammed Brothers to find out the need the need areas so that the university can come out with a content that would help them. By so doing it would boost their production so that they can give back to society.
The Pro Vice-Chancellor noted that “the initial agreement is five years, and after five years we need to sit down to renew or otherwise”
The Accountant of Mohammed Brothers, Usman Mohammed noted that this agreement has cemented the relationship between the two entities.
He said this agreement has put the Muhammed brothers at a higher pedestal in the small-scale mining industry, adding that it gives us recognition, at least it tells the outside world that we are doing the right thing when it comes to small-scale mining.
In the long term, we are looking at tapping some of the students who come to our site for attachment who would be beneficial to the company and would be engaged to help improve the operations of the company.
